The Chariton Varsity baseball team broke through with a big 9-0 win over Moravia at Milledge Field in Chariton Wednesday, June 16. The Chargers broke open a close game with eight runs total in the fifth and sixth innings to turn it into a rout.
With the win, Chariton moved to 3-12 overall.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Chargers scored once in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0. Chariton added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-0 and five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 9-0.
Quenten Curtis and Aidan Mundt combined to pitch a two-hit shutout on the mound. Curtis got the pitching win going five innings and giving up no runs and one hit while striking out four and walking two. Mundt pitched two innings and gave up no runs and one hit while striking out two and walking one.
Chariton cranked out eight hits at the plate including seven singles and a triple. They also had eight walks, seven RBIs and only three strikeouts.
Mundt went 3-4 at the plate with three singles, one run scored and three RBIs. Right fielder Brock Oxenreider went 2-4 with a single, a triple, one run scored and three RBIs.
Left fielder Kasyn Paige went 1-3 with a single, a run scored, a walk and a stolen base. Third baseman Kaden Fitzgerald went 1-2 with a single, two runs scored, two walks and a stolen base.
Shortstop Mason Smith went 1-2 with a single, two runs scored, an RBI and two walks.
Curtis went 0-2 with two runs scored, two walks and a stolen base. Center fielder Alex Bates went 0-4 and first baseman Preston Lane went 0-2. Catcher Blane Wallace went 0-3.
