The Chariton Varsity baseball team used a strong sixth inning and held off a last inning surge by Albia to beat the Blue Demons, 4-3, for their second win of the season at Milledge Field in Chariton Friday, June 11.
With the win, Chariton moved to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Albia scored once in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth the Chargers scored a run to tie it at 1-1.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when Chariton scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Albia responded with two runs in the top of the seventh to cut it to 4-3, but they couldn’t get the tying run across.
Aidan Mundt pitched the whole game for Chariton and got the win on the mound. In seven innings he gave up three runs, all earned, on seven hits while striking out one and walking one. Chariton’s defense played well behind Mundt committing just one error all night.
At the plate, Chariton had six hits including five singles and a double. They also had three RBIs, three walks and five strikeouts.
Mundt went 2-3 at the plate with two singles. Third baseman Kaden Fitzgerald went 1-3 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Second baseman Quenten Curtis went 1-2 with a single, two runs scored, and he was hit by a pitch.
Center fielder Alex Bates went 1-3 with a single and two RBIs. First baseman Preston Lane went 1-2 with a single and a walk.
Left fielder Kasyn Paige went 0-4. Shortstop Mason Smith went 0-3. Right fielder Brock Oxenreider went 0-2 with a run scored and a walk. Catcher Kaleb Offenburger went 0-2 with a walk. Nathan Anderson stole a base as a courtesy runner.
