The Chariton boys tennis team opened their season with a 7-2 loss to Centerville at Bingham Park courts in Chariton this past Thursday afternoon, April 1. Both of Chariton’s victories came in singles competition in the #4 and 5 matches.

Most of the singles matches as well as the doubles matches were competitive.

In the #1 Varsity singles match, Ethan Poling lost to Korey Shondel, 1-8. At #2 Spencer Smith lost to Centerville’s Otis Williams, 0-8. At #3 Dicen Blum lost to Lucas Henderson, 4-8.

In the #4 match, Chariton’s Mark Pyatak beat Owen Williams, 8-2. At #5, Ryan Grother beat Joey Sheets of Centerville, 8-4. At #6, Zach Polng lost to Ayden Beeson, 4-8.

In Varsity doubles play, Chariton’s #1 team of Poling/Smith lost to the team of Otis Williams/Reese Sells, 5-8. In the #2 doubles match, the team of Blum/Pyatak lost to the team of Shondel/Henderson, 4-8.

In the #3 doubles match, the team of Grother/Poling lost to the team of Owen Williams/Sheets, 0-8.

There was one JV singles match. In it Chariton’s Michael Chester lost to Ayden Beeson, 3-6.

“We didn’t know what to expect this first match since we didn’t play last year. Centerville has a good veteran team. It showed us what we need to work on and where we need to improve,” Chariton Head Coach Brian Zimmerli said.

The Chariton boys tennis team will host Clarke, Tuesday, April 6, at 4:15 p.m. at Bingham Park courts in Chariton.
