The Chariton Varsity softball team faced a tough test when it faced Class 4A’s #4 ranked team, ADM Adel, at Savage Field in Chariton this past Friday night. The Lady Chargers got off to a good start early but eventually lost 13-0 to the Tigers in five innings. It was Senior Night for Chariton where seniors Savannah Williams and Riley Mackey were honored before the Varsity game.
The Chariton Varsity girls face #1 ranked Albia in their Class 3A Region 4 quarterfinal game at Albia this Wednesday night July 15, at 7 p.m. The game will be at the Monroe County Sports Complex. Chariton finished the regular season at 0-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
Chariton held ADM scoreless in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Chariton got runners on base. Catcher Addie McGee hit a base hit to center with one out. Left fielder Savannah Williams hit a grounder to short and was safe at first by a fielder’s choice. McGee was thrown out at second for the second out.
Pitcher Layne Braby hit a base hit to put runners at first and third with two outs. The next batter Abby Doran struck out to end the inning with the score still 0-0. Chariton had trouble getting runners on after the first inning.
In the top of the third ADM, Adel got their offense going and reeled off eight runs to take an 8-0 lead. The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to go up 13-0.
Braby pitched well in defeat. In five innings she gave up 13 runs, 10 earned, on 14 hits while striking out one and walking three. She also gave up one sacrifice.
