The Chariton boys tennis team did outstanding at the District Tennis Tournament in Knoxville May 10. Chariton had the third and fourth place overall singles finisher and placed third overall as a team with 14 points.
Chariton’s Stan Kutsel placed third overall in singles play and Billy Rouw placed fourth overall.
As a team, Chariton placed behind only champion Pella, who had 23 points, and runner-up Grinnell, who had 16. Clarke was fourth with 10 points. Oskaloosa was fifth with nine and Albia was sixth with seven. Knoxville was seventh with three.
In singles play, Kutsel beat Oskaloosa’s River Campbell in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. In the second round, Kutsel beat Clarke’s Diego Hurtado, 6-0, 6-1.
In the third round, Kutsel lost to eventual runner-up Jack Edwards of Pella. In the third place match, Kutsel faced Rouw and beat him, 10-5 to finish third.
In the first round, Rouw beat Andrew Scholes of Oskaloosa, 6-2 and 6-0. In the second round Rouw shut out, TJ Woods of Clarke, 6-0 and 6-0. In the third round, Rouw lost to eventual champion Jordan Rozenboom of Pella, 0-6 and 0-6. In the third place match, Rouw lost to Kutsel, 10-5, to finish fourth.
In doubles play, the team of Aaron Sullenger/Micah Thatcher beat the team of John Reynoldson/Fabian Davola of Clarke, 6-1 and 6-2. The team of Sullenger/Thatcher lost to the team of Cade Snakenburg/Colton Stout of Oskaloosa, 3-6 and 2-6, and did not place.
