The Chariton High School Athletic Department is excited to announce the appointment of Mr. Christopher Watkins as the new varsity volleyball coach. His coaching position was approved at the May 11 Chariton School Board meeting.
Watkins is pleased to join the coaching staff at Chariton High School, and excited to face this new and exciting challenge. Previous to this appointment, Watkins has coached club and middle school volleyball in Wilton, Iowa and Chariton for several years. He also worked to help establish the Chariton Volleyball Club to help instill the love of volleyball in kids of all ages.
“I’m excited to work with a fantastic group of athletes and coaches at the high school level and build on the foundation that Coach Cain has in place at CHS,” Watkins said. “I’ve had the privilege of coaching many of these talented young athletes already and know their work ethic and drive. They are competitors on and off the court.”
Watkins is planning to host open gyms and team camp this summer for interested athletes. “Once we have permission to get back into the gym safely, we plan to provide opportunities for athletes to work on speed and agility training and advance their volleyball skills,” he said.
Watkins is an active member of the Chariton community, serving as the current president of the Lucas County Development Corporation, a member of the Lucas County Preservation Society, a member of Rotary International, and an active volunteer with the Chariton Boosters. He is also the Vice President of Marketing and Customer Engagement at Cornerstone Strategies, LLC and an independent insurance agent with KTA Insurance Agency in Chariton.
