The Chariton Varsity softball team built a big early lead and held off a rally by Central Decatur in the sixth inning to beat the Cardinals, 9-6, at Savage Field in Chariton Wednesday, June 23. With the win, Chariton moved to 10-10 overall.

At the plate, Chariton pounded out 12 hits including six singles and six doubles and nine RBIs. They also had two walks and only three strikeouts. Chariton overcame five errors defensively.

Four players had multi-hit games for Chariton. Third baseman Sydney Cain went 3-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs. Catcher Addie McGee went 2-4 with a double, a single, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Center fielder Tayah Spiker went 2-3 with two singles and one run scored. Outfielder Haddon Anderson went 2-4 with two singles and one run scored.

Madison Buckalew pitched very well and got the win. In seven innings she gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits while striking out nine and walking two.

In the bottom of the first inning, Chariton shortstop Layne Braby smacked a double to center to score Cain to give Chariton a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third McGee hit a leadoff double to left. Abby Doran came in as a courtesy runner for McGee. Cain smacked a double to left to score Doran to give Chariton a 2-0 lead.

With one out, first baseman Macy Wood hit an RBI double to score Cain and give Chariton a 3-0 lead. The inning ended with Chariton still leading 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, designated player Addie Peterson led off the inning by reaching base on error. Spiker hit the ball to the pitcher and was safe at first. Anderson got a hit for Chariton to load the bases with no outs.

McGee was up next and got a walk to score Peterson and move Chariton’s lead to 4-0. Doran came in as a courtesy runner for McGee. Cain was up next and smacked a two-RBI double to give Chariton a 6-0 lead. Doran scored after a high pitch got past the Central Decatur catcher to put Chariton up 7-0.

Braby hit the ball to right field but the fielder couldn’t catch it, which enabled a run to score and put Chariton up 8-0. Wood grounded out to short for the first out. Outfielder Virginia Smith grounded out to third but it scored a run to put Chariton up 9-0.

Second baseman Lexi Smyser flew out to center for the third out with Chariton leading 9-0 after four innings.

The score remained the same until the top of the sixth when Central Decatur reeled off six runs to cut Chariton’s lead to 9-6. The Cardinals couldn’t get any closer though as they were held scoreless in the top of the seventh.

At the plate, Smyser went 1-3 with a single. Braby went 1-4 with a double, a run scored, three RBIs, a walk, and she reached base on error once. Wood went 1-4 with a double and an RBI.

Smith went 0-3 with an RBI. Peterson went 0-3 with a run scored and she reached base on error once.

Defensively, Chariton had 21 put outs and 16 assists. McGee and Wood each led the team with eight put outs apiece. Spiker had two put outs. Cain, Braby and Smyser had one apiece.

Buckalew led the team in assists with eight. Braby had three assists and McGee and Cain had two apiece. Smyser had one assist.
