The Chariton Varsity baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Davis County Wednesday, June 9. The Chargers fell to the Mustangs 5-4 in game one and they lost the nightcap, 11-1.

With the losses, Chariton moved to 1-10 overall at the time and 0-6 in the conference.

Davis County 5 Chariton 4

In the first game, Chariton erased most of a 5-0 deficit and came up just short of tying it at the end. Davis County scored one run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-0.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when Chariton got their offense going and reeled off four runs to make it a 5-4 game. The Chargers weren’t able to get the tying run across in the top of the seventh.

Quenten Curtis pitched the whole game for Chariton and pitched well in defeat. In six innings, Curtis gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out four and walking none. He also hit one batter with a pitch.

Noah Zmolek got the win for Davis County and struck out 10 batters while walking four. He gave up three runs, all earned, on six hits. He also hit one batter with a pitch.

Chariton had eight hits at the plate including six singles and two doubles. They also had four RBIs and five walks.

Right fielder Brock Oxenreider went 2-3 with a single, double, and one run scored. Second baseman Kaden Fitzgerald went 2-3 with two singles, one run scored and a walk. Shortstop Mason Smith went 2-3 with two singles, one RBI and a walk.

Left fielder Kasyn Paige went 1-2 with a double, a run scored, two RBIs, a walk and he was hit by a pitch. Catcher Kaleb Offenburger went 1-4 with a single and an RBI.

Curtis went 0-4 at the plate. First baseman Aidan Mundt went 0-3 with a walk. Third baseman Preston Lane went 0-4. Center fielder Alex Bates went 0-2 with a run scored and a walk.

Davis County 11 Chariton 1

In the second game, Davis County scored eight runs in the first and one in the second to take an early 9-0 lead. Chariton scored once in the fourth to cut it to 9-1. The Mustangs scored twice more in the sixth to make it 11-1.

Kasyn Paige took the loss on the mound. In 2/3 of an inning he gave up seven runs, all earned, on four hits while striking out none and walking three. Nathan Anderson pitched one inning and gave up two runs, both earned, on four hits while striking out none and walking two.

Caleb Werts pitched three and 2/3 innings and gave up two runs, both earned, on four hits while striking out three and walking four. He also hit one batter with a pitch.

Chariton had six hits at the plate. Paige went 1-2 with a single and a walk. Curtis went 1-3 with a single and he reached base on error once. Fitzgerald went 0-2 and he was hit by a pitch.

Smith went 1-3 with a single and a run scored. Mundt went 1-3 with a single. Offenburger went 0-1. Catcher Blane Wallace went 1-2 with a single. Bates went 1-3 with a single and an RBI. Lane went 0-2 and Oxenreider went 0-2.
