CHS Varsity girls fall to third-ranked Albia

The Chariton Varsity softball team played hard and never gave up in a 9-1 loss to the #3 ranked and undefeated Albia Lady Dees at Savage Field in Chariton Monday night, June 29.

With the loss Chariton moved to 0-6 overall. Albia moved to 10-0 with the win.

“This was a good effort by the girls. We only committed three errors, which was so much better than the week before. Savannah Williams had a great night going 2-2 with a walk and two ESPN Top 10 catches in left field,” Chariton Head Coach Deb Seuferer said.

The game went the full seven innings. After a scoreless first inning, Albia scored two runs in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fourth when Albia added three more runs to push their lead to 5-0. Albia added three more runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to make it 9-0.

Chariton got two runners on base right away in the bottom of the sixth and scored one run to make it 9-1. They couldn’t get any closer, but they held Albia scoreless over the final inning to make it a 9-1 final score.

Layne Braby started on the mound and pitched well in defeat. In five and 1/3 innings, she gave up nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits while striking out one and walking three. She also allowed one sacrifice. Brenna Shriver made an appearance and pitched one and 2/3 innings and gave up no hits or runs while striking out none and walking three.

Chariton had five hits at the plate and drew four walks and stole two bases. They also had 12 strikeouts.

Williams went 2-2 with two singles, one RBI and one walk. First baseman Mckenzie Snook went 1-4 with a single. Catcher Addie McGee went 1-2 with a single and was hit by a pitch. Center fielder Haddon Anderson went 1-3 with a single.

Shortstop Abby Doran went 0-3 with a run scored, a walk and a stolen base. Braby went 0-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Shriver went 0-3 and second baseman Riley Mackey went 0-2 with a walk. Third baseman Peyton Ruble went 0-3. Hannah Schlutz played as a pinch runner.
