The Chariton Varsity girls basketball team got another good win with a 58-42 victory over Davis County at Chariton Tuesday, Feb. 2. After a close first quarter, Chariton built a lead in the second period and led by nine at halftime and used tough defense and clutch free throw shooting to put the game away in the second half.
The win was the fourth in a row for the Lady Chargers, who improved to 9-5 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
McKenzie Snook had a double-double with a team-high 19 points and 13 rebounds. Avery Hall had 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Emma Rector had 12 points and six assists. Leah Doran had four points and six steals. Abby Tuttle had five points.
“I thought that for four quarters tonight we played about as well as we have all year. Davis County is pretty athletic and we did a real good job defensively on them. McKenzie was outstanding offensively and on the boards and Avery was big as well. Emma’s starting to find her groove and she’s doing a nice job of taking care of the ball. She had six assists this game and seven the last game,” Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.
Chariton’s game at Wayne this past Thursday night was postponed and rescheduled to this Tuesday night, Feb. 9, at Wayne. The game against Oskaloosa at Chariton this past Saturday was also postponed due to the weather and hasn’t been rescheduled to this point.
The game was back and forth early on. Tuttle hit a three for Chariton to give them a 4-2 lead with 5:34 left in the first period. After a three-point play by Davis County, Hall scored to make it 6-5 Chariton.
Davis County’s Sophia Young made a lay up to make it 7-6 Davis County. Chariton responded with a 6-0 run on a basket by Hall and a three-pointer by Rector. Hall was fouled and made one free throw to make it 12-7 Chariton with 2:33 left in the first period.
Davis County’s Ella Porter scored to make it 12-9 Chariton. Hall scored for Chariton to make it 14-9 but Davis County answered with a three-pointer to cut it to 14-12. Hall hit a free throw with 1:05 left in the period to make it 15-12 Chariton, which was the score at the end of the first period.
After Davis County’s Morgan Petefish scored to cut it to 15-14 at the start of the second period, Chariton went on a 6-0 run on a basket by Snook, Hall and then Snook again to make it 21-14 Chariton.
Davis County cut the lead to 21-17 a while later but Snook scored two straight baskets and Doran hit a lay up to give Chariton a 27-17 lead late in the second period. Doran scored a lay up off of a steal to make it 29-17 Chariton. Davis County’s Isabelle Settles hit a three-pointer towards the end of the half to make the score 29-20 Chariton at halftime.
Chariton began the second half on a 6-0 run on baskets by Hall, Snook and Rector to take a 35-20 lead. Hall scored awhile later to make it 37-21. Davis County went on a 7-0 run from that point to cut the lead to 37-28.
Following a Chariton timeout with 2:20 left in the third period, Snook was fouled with 2:04 left in the period and made both free throws to make it 39-28 Chariton. Rector nailed a three-pointer to push Chariton’s lead to 42-28.
Davis County’s Petefish scored to make it 42-30. Snook was fouled with no time left on the clock and made both free throws to give Chariton a 44-30 lead at the end of the third period.
Davis County’s Settles hit a three-pointer to cut Chariton’s lead to 44-33 with 6:23 left in the game. Snook answered with a basket for Chariton to make it 46-33.
With Chariton leading 48-37 with 3:11 left, Tuttle was fouled and made both foul shots to make it 50-37. Rector was fouled with 2:28 left and 1:58 left and made both foul shots each time to give Chariton a 54-37 lead.
Hall scored and was fouled and missed the free throw with 1:30 left to make it 56-37 Chariton. Davis County hit a basket to make it 56-39. Snook scored in the final minute to make it 58-39 Chariton. Davis County’s Young scored and was fouled with 16 seconds left and made the free throw to make it 58-42 Chariton, which was the final score.
For the game, Chariton shot 20-49 from the field and 15-22 from the line. Davis County shot 14-43 from the field and 8-16 from the line. Chariton outrebounded Davis County, 31-24. Chariton had only 13 turnovers while Davis County had 22.
Chariton had 11 assists, 13 steals and five blocks. Davis County had six assists, eight steals and one block. Chariton committed 13 fouls and Davis County committed 19.
