A strong first three innings by the opponent was too much to overcome in the Chariton Varsity baseball team’s 15-9 loss at Fairfield June 1.

With the loss, Chariton moved to 3-4 at the time. Fairfield moved to 3-4 with the win.

The Trojans scored 10 runs over the first three innings to take an early 10-2 lead. They scored three runs in the first, four in the second and three in the third while Chariton answered with one run in the top of the second and one in the top of the third.

The Chargers erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 10-7. Fairfield scored once in the bottom of the fourth to go up by four. Chariton scored once in the top of the fifth to cut it to three again but the Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and once in the bottom of the sixth to go up 15-8.

Chariton scored one more run in the top of the seventh to cut it to 15-9 but couldn’t get any closer.

Kasyn Paige, Blane Wallace and Max Auiwes each pitched for Chariton with Paige taking the loss on the mound. In one and 1/3 innings Paige gave up seven runs, all earned, on three hits while striking out none and walking five. He also hit one batter with a pitch.

In three and 2/3 innings, Wallace gave up six runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out two and walking three. In one inning, Aulwes gave up three runs, none earned, on one hit while striking out none and walking two. He also hit two batters with pitches.

At the plate, Chariton had seven hits, six strikeouts and 12 walks. Paige went 3-4 with two singles and a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Shortstop Mason Smith went 1-2 with a single, two runs scored and three walks.

Center fielder Brock Oxenreider went 1-3 with a single, one RBI and two walks. Wallace went 1-4 with a single, two RBIs and a walk. Third baseman Nathan Anderson went 1-3 with a single, two runs scored and he reached base on error once. He was also hit by a pitch.

Catcher Kaleb Offenburger went 0-5 with two RBIs. Designated hitter Caleb Werts went 0-4 with a walk. Aulwes had a walk. Left fielder Josh Desmond went 0-2 with a walk. Carver Mason went 0-1 with a run scored and a walk. Skyler Storm went 0-2 with two runs scored and a walk. He also reached base on error once.

Defensively, Chariton committed seven errors. They also had 18 put outs and zero assists. Wallace led the team in put outs with four. Anderson had three put outs. Paige, Smith, Offenburger, Desmond and first baseman Logan Shore had two apiece. Oxenreider had one put out.
