A big first and sixth inning by the opponent and too many errors defensively proved costly to the Chariton Varsity softball team in a 9-6 loss to Clarke at Osceola Monday, June 21.

Chariton catcher Addie McGee hit a home run and went 2-4 with a home run and a single, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Chariton fell behind 5-1 after one inning and trailed 6-1 after three innings. The Lady Chargers battled back with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth, but Clarke scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win. Chariton committed seven errors defensively on the night.

The loss moved Chariton’s record to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in the conference at that point. Chariton beat Clarke, 5-1, at Chariton earlier in the season.

Layne Braby and Madison Buckalew both pitched for Chariton and Buckalew took the loss on the mound. Buckalew pitched five and 2/3 innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out three and walking none. Braby pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits while striking out none and walking one.

Chariton did well at the plate with 10 hits including a home run, seven singles and two doubles. They also had six RBIs, three walks and only one strikeout.

Center fielder Tayah Spiker went 2-3 with a double, single, one run scored and she was hit by a pitch. Outfielder Haddon Anderson went 2-4 with two singles and two runs scored. Buckalew went 1-3 with a single, a run scored and a walk. Third baseman Sydney Cain went 1-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Outfielder Virginia Smith went 1-4 with a single and two RBIs. Second baseman Lexi Smyser went 1-4 with a single, an RBI and she reached base on error once.

Braby went 0-1 at the plate. First baseman Macy Wood went 0-4 with a walk and she was hit by a pitch. Designated player Addie Peterson went 0-4.

Defensively, Chariton had 18 put outs and 11 assists. McGee and Wood led the team in put outs with five apiece. Abby Doran had three put outs and Anderson and Cain had two apiece. Spiker had one put out.

Buckalew led the team in assists with five. Doran had three assists and Cain had two. Smyser had one assist.
