The Chariton Varsity girls basketball team played well for most of the game in a 54-46 loss to Centerville at Chariton Tuesday, Feb. 9.

With the loss, Chariton moved to 9-6 overall and they finished third place in the conference this season at 6-6.

“We played pretty well the whole game. The difference was the third quarter. We were pretty aggressive offensively in the first half and shot it pretty well but we weren’t as aggressive in the third quarter and it ended up costing us. We also didn’t shoot it as well in the third quarter,” Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.

Junior point guard Emma Rector had a solid all-around game for Chariton with a team-high 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and one block. McKenzie Snook had 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. Avery Hall had 10 points and one block.

Caci Goldensoph had four points. Leah Doran had three points, three assists and three steals.

Centerville led 13-7 after one period but Chariton had a big second quarter outscoring the Redettes 23-8 to lead 30-21 at halftime. In the third period Centerville took advantage of Chariton’s lack of aggressiveness and outscored them 20-5 to take a 41-35 lead heading into the final period.

The fourth period was tight with both teams playing well, but Chariton wasn’t able to really get on a run offensively and Centerville outscored them 13-11 to win by eight.

“Centerville’s a good team. They’re big and tough to match up with. They have three girls who are each at least 6 ft. tall and it’s tough to match up with them. They also have two good guards. We played pretty well defensively the whole game,” Coach Sandy said.

Chariton lost 50-21 to the Redettes at Centerville earlier this season, so the Lady Chargers did much better the second time against Centerville.

For the game, Chariton shot 15-39 from the field and 12-13 from the line. Centerville shot 17-44 from the field and 13-28 from the line. Centerville outrebounded Chariton, 33-24.

The Lady Chargers had 18 turnovers and Centerville had 15. Chariton had nine assists, nine steals and two blocks and Centerville had nine assists, 11 steals and three blocks. Chariton committed 20 fouls and Centerville committed 16.
