A furious comeback by the Chariton Varsity softball team against Albia came up just short in a 10-7 loss to the Lady Dees at Savage Field in Chariton this past Thursday night, June 10.

Faced with a 10-1 deficit going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Chariton came roaring back and scored six runs over the last three innings to make it a close game. At the time, the loss moved Chariton to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Chariton almost came back despite committing eight errors defensively. The Lady Chargers had 11 hits at the plate including 10 singles and one double. Chariton also had six walks, seven RBIs, and seven strikeouts.

Outfielder Haddon Anderson, pitcher Layne Braby and first baseman Macy Wood all had good nights at the plate. Anderson went 2-5 with two singles, one run scored and she was hit by a pitch. Braby went 2-4 with two singles, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Wood went 2-4 with a single and double, three RBIs and a walk.

Braby pitched the whole game on the mound and pitched well in defeat. In seven innings she gave up 10 runs, six earned, on 11 hits while striking out five and walking one.

Albia started out strong scoring four runs in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the first Chariton catcher Addie McGee drew a walk and later scored on a passed ball to make the score 4-1.

Albia scored two more runs in the second and one in the third to take a 7-1 lead. The Lady Dees added three more runs in the top of the fifth to make it 10-1 and seemingly put the game out of reach.

However, Chariton didn’t quit and had their best innings offensively over the last three innings. The Lady Chargers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Albia lead to 10-4. Chariton scored two more runs in the sixth and one more run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 10-7, but couldn’t get any closer.

McGee went 1-4 at the plate with a single, two runs scored, two RBIs and two walks. Third baseman Sydney Cain went 1-4 with a single. Addie Peterson went 1-4 with a single, a run scored, and an RBI.

Shortstop Abby Doran went 1-4 with a single, a run scored and two walks. Outfielder Tayah Spiker went 1-4 with a single and a walk. Second baseman Lexi Smyser went 0-4.

Defensively, Chariton had 21 put outs and eight assists. Anderson and McGee each led the team in put outs with six apiece. Cain, Wood and Doran each had two put outs. Smyser, Spiker and Aubrey Snuggs each had one put out.

Braby led the team in assists with six. Spiker and Doran each had one assist.
