The Chariton Varsity baseball team lost a pair of close games in a doubleheader at Clarke Monday, June 21. Clarke won the first game 5-4 and they scored one run in the seventh inning to win the nightcap, 1-0.

With the losses, Chariton moved to 3-15 overall and 1-11 in conference play

Clarke 5 Chariton 4

The first game was scoreless through the first three innings. The Chargers scored two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Clarke scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it at two apiece.

Clarke scored two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Chariton responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to tie it at 4-4. The Indians scored once in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead and held Chariton scoreless in the top of the seventh to get the win.

Quenten Curtis pitched the whole game and took the loss on the mound. In six innings Curtis gave up five runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out four and walking one. He also hit two batters with pitches. Chariton played all right defensively committing just two errors.

At the plate, Chariton had three hits, all singles, along with two RBIs, five walks and just three strikeouts.

At the plate, Curtis went 1-3 with a single, a run scored and a walk. Right fielder Brock Oxenreider went 1-3 with a single. Left fielder Kasyn Paige went 1-4 with a single.

Second baseman Kaden Fitzgerald went 0-3 with a run scored and was hit by a pitch. Shortstop Mason Smith went 0-4. First baseman Aidan Mundt went 0-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Catcher Kaleb Offenburger went 0-2 with an RBI and a walk. First baseman Preston Lane went 0-2 with a walk. Center fielder Alex Bates went 0-2 with a walk.

Defensively, Chariton had 18 put outs and seven assists. Mundt led the team in put outs with five. Offenburger had four and Paige and Fitzgerald had three apiece. Bates had two put outs and Curtis had one. Offenburger and Lane led the team in assists with two apiece. Paige, Curtis and Fitzgerald each had one.

The second game was a scoreless tie until the bottom of the seventh inning when Clarke scored the game’s only run to win, 1-0.

Aidan Mundt pitched well in defeat for Chariton. In six innings, Mundt gave up just one earned run on five hits while striking out three and walking one. Clarke’s Zethann May tossed a two-hit shutout where he struck out eight batters and walked none.

In the second game, Chariton also had three hits at the plate, all singles. They also had no walks and eight strikeouts.

Curtis went 1-3 with a single. Smith went 1-3 with a single. Bates went 1-2 with a single. Paige went 0-3 and Fitzgerald went 0-3. Mundt went 0-3 and Oxenreider went 0-2. Designated hitter Caleb Werts went 0-2. Lane went 0-2. Blane Wallace played at catcher but didn’t bat.

Chariton played well defensively committing just one error. The Chargers 18 put outs and five assists in the second game. Wallace, Bates and Lane led the team in put outs with four apiece. Paige had two put outs. Curtis, Smith, Mundt and Oxenreider had one apiece. Smith led the team in assists with three. Curtis and Fitzgerald each had one.
