Mariannette Miller-Meeks, a Republican, is running for the U.S. House District 2 seat against Democrat Rita Hart in the Nov. 3 election.

Miller-Meeks is currently a State Senator for District 41 and has served in the Iowa State Senate since 2018. She and her husband Curt currently live in Ottumwa.

Miller-Meeks said why she decided to run for the U.S. House seat.

“I’m running for Congress to use my expertise as a doctor, 24-year military veteran, and former director of Iowa Public Health to combat this pandemic, rebuild our economy, and to get Iowans safely back to work,” Miller Meeks said.

The issues that are central to Miller-Meeks’ campaign include reforming our health care system to make it more affordable, accessible and portable. She also wants to rebuild our economy and to get Iowans safely back to work by cutting regulations, focusing on skills training and apprenticeships, and cutting taxes.

Another issue central to Miller-Meeks’ campaign is to protect our veterans by keeping the promises that have been made to them and improving the VA.

Miller-Meeks was asked to give her take on what should be done about the following issues: education, health care, the economy and jobs, and agriculture.

Education: “When it comes to education we need to increase vocational education, reduce the federal government’s micromanaging of the classroom and allow parents and school boards to make their own decisions, instead of the federal government,” Miller-Meeks said.

Health Care: “I support making health care more affordable, accessible, and portable and allowing people to have control of their own health care,” Miller-Meeks said.

Economy and Jobs: “We need to rebuild our economy by cutting taxes, reducing burdensome regulations, attracting folks to our state to meet the demand for our workforce, but also to have skills training and apprenticeships to help train folks for these jobs. We also need an infrastructure plan that would put thousands of Iowans back to work,” Miller-Meeks said.
