Delaney Werts

Delaney Werts is the new Special Education teacher at the Preschool.

Werts graduated from Chariton High School in 2016. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in Cedar Falls in November 2020 with a BA degree in Early Childhood Education, and a minor in Literacy.

Werts student taught in Ottumwa at Pickwick ECC in the 4-year-old Preschool program and at Grant Elementary in Albia.

Werts’s parents are Shawn and Katie Werts. Delaney has a brother, Kinser, a boyfriend, Chandler Briggs, and a dog, Dalli.

In her spare time, Werts enjoys crafting, camping, spending time on the farm with Chandler, going on rides with her dog, spending time with her friends and family, and playing/learning new card and board games.

Allison Renaud

Allison Renaud is the new kindergarten teacher at Columbus Elementary in Chariton.

Renaud holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Central College.

In her spare time, Renaud likes spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoys anything outdoors, and watching good TV shows.

Chelsea Smith

Chelsea Smith is the new second grade teacher at Columbus Elementary in Chariton.

Smith attended Central College in Pella and graduated from there with an Elementary Education degree and a reading endorsement. This will be her first year of teaching.

Smith’s family consists of her husband, Payton, her parents, Greg and Kim Roose, and her sister, Lindsey.

Smith enjoys traveling with her family. She also likes attending sprint car races with her husband.

Kaylee Morgan

Kaylee Morgan is the new K-5 Special Education Teacher for the Chariton School District.

Morgan graduated from William Penn in Oskaloosa in May 2021 with a degree in Elementary Education. Her endorsements are K-6 Elementary Classroom, K-8 Reading, and K-8 Instructional Strategist I. This will be her first year of teaching.

Morgan and her husband, Nick, have three children. They are: Adilynn, 10 years old, Emalee, seven years old, and Colton, one year old.

Morgan and her family love going camping and going to the zoo.

Abbee Nielsen

Abbee Nielsen is the new fourth grade teacher at Van Allen Elementary in Chariton.

Nielsen received her BS degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State University in May 2016.

Right out of college Nielsen accepted a position as Director of HOPE Learning Center in Chariton. She left HOPE to accept a second grade teacher position for the Albia Community School District during the 2020-21 school year.

Nielsen and her husband, Troy, have three children. They are: Addilee, seven years old, MJ, four years old, and Marshall, two years old.

In her spare time, Nielsen loves spending time with her family at the lake.

Cynda Mehlert

Cynda Mehlert is the new fifth grade teacher at Van Allen Elementary in Chariton.

“I am a 2006 graduate of Chariton High School and I am so exited to be back in the area with my family,” Mehlert said.

Mehlert holds a BA degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood, and Early Childhood Special Education, all from the University of Northern Iowa. She also holds a Masters degree in Differentiated Instruction from Graceland University.

Mehlert has 10 years of experience teaching. This includes Preschool-third grade Special Education in Waterloo, Preschool to fifth grade at Benton Community Schools, and being an Instructional Coach at Benton Community.

Mehlert’s family consists of her husband, Chad, and their three children: Jaxson, 11 years old, Leigha, nine years old, and Logan, six years old.

In her spare time, Mehlert enjoys camping, playing golf, spending time outdoors, reading and spending time with friends and family.

Evy Wells

Evy Wells is the new .5 Art and .5 Elective (Life Skills) teacher at Chariton Middle School.

Wells graduated high school from Knoxville, Iowa. She received her Associates degree from Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in Creston, and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Graceland University in Lamoni.

Wells was a long-term substitute for Chariton High School for a semester before Covid. She also long-term subbed for the 2020-21 school year at Chariton Middle School, teaching Art.

Wells is engaged to be married. Her hobbies are golfing, fishing, and anything art related.

Jacob Kraber

Jacob Kraber is the new Chariton band teacher for fifth grade and grades 9-12.

Kraber received his BA degree in Music from the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 2020. He was a substitute teacher at Northview Middle School in Ankeny, Iowa.

Kraber’s parents are Jeff and Michelle. He also has a brother, Joshua, who is 22, and a sister, Kaitlyn, who is 18.

Kraber enjoys playing the trumpet, and playing with and petting all of his animals. (They have two dogs, a cat, a rabbit, two rats, and two mice.) He also enjoys going on walks, and spending time with his wonderful girlfriend, Kelley.

Kylie Bengtson

Kylie Bengtson is the new Physical and Earth Science teacher at Chariton High School.

Bengtson graduated from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2017, with a B.S. degree in Physical Education.

Bengtson’s family consists of her parents, Mike and Kris Bengtson, a brother, Christian Bengtson, and two sisters, Ellie and Grace Bengtson.

In her spare time, Bengtson enjoys playing and watching sports, hanging out with friends, and going on walks around town with her mom.
