R Iowa Barn, located just about a five-minute drive south of Chariton on Highway 14 is open and taking reservations for weddings and other events.
The rustic barn themed venue is owned by Jim and Verna Rotz. They began building in July of 2019 and actually completed construction in May of 2020, but in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic people just weren’t having many large gatherings for weddings reunions and parties.
“Covid has really knocked us for a loop,” said Jim.
Now though, as the pandemic is coming to and end, Jim and Verna want everyone to know that R Iowa Barn is open for business and has reservations available.
The businesses recently put in a new sign near the entrance and had a ribbon cutting with members of the Chariton Chamber.
Jim and Verna said they previously owned a farm with a bed and breakfast near Rathbun Lake. They would also host Cub Scout Jamborees and large July 4 celebrations at their property, so they were used to hosting events before opening their new venue.
“And he’s dreamed of having a beautiful barn forever and ever and ever,” said Verna. “He draws pictures all the time.”
Jim, who designed the venue, said he was inspired by several barn weddings the couple attended around Iowa that were either freezing or burning hot. He wanted to make sure his venue was a comfortable spot for everyone to enjoy.
R Iowa Barn has a capacity of 180 and features a kitchen area, balcony, and patio as well as some outdoor space.
“And we’ve got more that we’re building, inside and out,” said Jim. “We’re not done yet.”
