The Chariton Varsity softball team gave a great effort against the #7 team in Class 3A, Albia, in a 7-1 loss at Savage Field in Chariton Monday night.
Chariton trailed by just three runs after four innings. They also had five hits on the night including a triple and committed just two errors defensively.
“We had a better effort and attitude tonight. Grace Bengtson threw well on the mound,” Chariton Head Coach Deb Seuferer said.
Bengtson pitched the whole game and took the loss. In seven innings, she gave up seven runs, all earned, on 13 hits while striking out four and walking three.
The game was scoreless after one inning. Albia scored three runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. They added one more in the fourth to make it 4-0. Chariton scored in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-1 game.
Chariton couldn’t get any closer as the Lady Dees added two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
One area where Chariton struggled was with strikeouts at the plate where they had 14.
Right fielder Taylor Welch went 2-3 with two singles and one RBI. Third baseman Macy Wood went 1-2 with a triple and a walk. Catcher Macy Johnston went 1-3 with a single and a run scored. First baseman Layne Braby went 1-3 with a single.
Bengtson went 0-3 and shortstop Haddon Anderson went 0-3. Second baseman Lexi Smyser went 0-3 and left fielder Brenna Shriver went 0-3. Left fielder Leah Doran went 0-2 with a sacrifice bunt.
