The Chariton Varsity baseball team used a big start to beat Van Buren, 15-5, in their Class 2A District 8 first round District game at Eddyville Saturday night. Despite struggling offensively recently, the Chargers pounded out 14 hits and 11 RBIs and received great pitching from Jackson Fisher and Brady Hamilton in the win.
The Chargers had lost seven in a row coming in including a 13-1 loss to Winterset in their final regular season game, but none of that mattered Saturday night.
With the win, Chariton improved to 6-19 overall and advanced to play Central Lee, Donnellson in the second round at Central Lee Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
Senior catcher Colbie Werts had an outstanding night at the plate against Van Buren going 3-3 with a home run, a double, single, a run scored, a whopping six RBIs and one walk. He was also hit by a pitch.
Senior right fielder Tyler Gookin went 3-5 with a double, two singles, two runs scored and one RBI. Senior center fielder Brady Hamilton, who also pitched, went 3-5 with a double, two singles and one run scored.
Senior second baseman Reid Walters went 2-5 with a double, single, one run scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
Against Van Buren, the Varsity Chargers scored three runs in the first inning and three in the second inning to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. The Chargers added two more in the fourth and two in the fifth to go up 10-0. Van Buren scored three runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 10-3.
Chariton scored three runs in the sixth to make it 13-3. Van Buren scored once more in the bottom of the sixth. Chariton scored twice in the top of the seventh to make it 15-4. Van Buren added one more run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get any closer.
Jackson Fisher got the win on the mound going five innings and giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out seven and walking one. Hamilton pitched two innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out two and walking one.
