The Chariton Varsity Baseball team split a doubleheader with Clarke at Milledge Field in Chariton Monday night.
Chariton scored 10 runs in the fifth inning in the first game to break open a close game and win 13-3. In the second game, Clarke built an early 3-0 lead and went on to win, 7-3.
Chariton 13 Clarke 3
In the first game, the Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Chariton scored once in the second to cut it to 2-1 and Clarke answered with a run in the third to make it 3-1. The Chargers scored once in the top of the third to cut it to 3-2.
Chariton then erupted and reeled off 10 runs in the top of the fifth to take a 12-3 lead. They scored one more run in the top of the sixth to make it 13-3.
Brady Hamilton pitched the whole game and got the win. In six innings he gave up three runs, all earned, on six hits while striking out nine and walking two.
Chariton didn’t commit any errors defensively while Clarke committed three. Chariton had 11 hits, seven walks and two strikeouts. Clarke had six hits, two walks and nine strikeouts. Clarke left four runners on base and Chariton left eight.
At the plate, Hamilton went 2-5 with a triple, single, one run scored, three RBIs and one stolen base. Shortstop Jackson Fisher went 3-4 with three singles, two runs scored and a stolen base. He was also hit by a pitch.
Second baseman Reid Walters went 3-4 with three singles, one run scored and three RBIs. Catcher Colbie Werts went 1-3 with a single and was also hit by a pitch. Right fielder Logan Demichelis went 1-2 with a single, run scored and an RBI. Third baseman Quenten Curtis went 1-3 with a single, a run scored, one RBI and a stolen base. He also had a sacrifice.
Center fielder Tristan Brackett went 0-3 with a run scored and two walks. First baseman Preston Lane went 0-1 with three runs scored and one walk. He was also hit by a pitch twice.
Right fielder Tyler Gookin went 0-2 with a run scored and two walks. Left fielder P.J. Rich scored a run and had two walks. Courtesy runner Alex Bates scored a run.
Clarke 7 Chariton 3
In the nightcap, Clarke scored once in the bottom of the first to lead 1-0. The Indians added two more runs in the third to go up 3-0. Chariton scored three runs in the top of the fourth to tie it at 3-3. Clarke answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-3. The Indians added one more run in the fifth.
Chariton didn’t fare as well defensively in this game committing five errors while Clarke didn’t have any.
Ashton Vitale took the loss on the mound. In four innings he gave up six runs, all earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking four. Rich pitched three innings and gave up one unearned run and one hit while striking out six and walking one.
Chariton had eight hits, five walks and 15 strikeouts at the plate in this game. Clarke had eight hits, five walks and 11 strikeouts. Each team left 11 baserunners.
