A strong third inning and a couple of runs late weren’t quite enough for the Chariton Varsity softball team in a 6-5 loss to Murray at Chariton Friday night.

The Mustangs scored two runs in the first and one in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.

Chariton rallied to tie it with three runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Grace Bengtson was hit by a pitch. Macy Wood hit a grounder and was safe at first base due to an error on the first baseman. She advanced to second putting runners at second and third with one out.

Catcher Macy Johnston was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Savannah Williams smacked a base hit up the middle to score Bengtson and make it 3-1. With two outs, Lexi Smsyer smashed a base hit to right field scoring both Wood and Johnston to make it 3-3.

In the top of the fourth, Murray gad runners at first and second with two outs but Bengtson struck out the next batter to end the inning and keep the score 3-3.

Chariton scored once in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Murray responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to go up 6-4. The Lady Chargers added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-5 but couldn’t score the tying run.

Bengtson took the loss on the mound. In seven innings she gave up six runs, all earned, on 13 hits while striking out nine and walking two. Chariton’s defense only committed two errors.
