The Chariton varsity boys basketball team got off to a great start and never looked back in a 74-39 win over Southwest Valley on Senior Night at Chariton Friday night. The Chargers shot a blistering 62 percent from inside the arc and hit five three pointers in the win. The victory moved the Chargers to 11-5 overall.
The Chariton senior players were honored with their parents in between the varsity girls and boys games. The Chariton seniors honored were Nathan Blong, Tyler Gookin, Nathan Weaver, Noah Weaver, Brodey Johnson, Tim Primakov and Payton Schaeffer.
Nathan Weaver led Chariton with 14 points to go along with 12 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Dylan Cain shot 6-8 from the field and had 13 points, three rebounds, two assists, five steals and three blocks.
Nathan Blong had nine points, three rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Noah Weaver had nine points and four rebounds. Brodey Johnson had eight points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block. Jackson Curnutte had seven points, one rebound, six assists and three steals.
Payton Schaeffer hit one three pointer and had five points and three rebounds. Jordan Wood had three points, one rebound and two assists. Tyler Gookin had three points and Tim Primakov had two points. Will Swarthout had one point and one assist. Hunter Koehn had one rebound.
“I thought we played really well in this game. I thought we came out with great energy and intensity. We were able to put some pressure on them defensively, which caused some turnovers. We were able to get a bunch of transition baskets. I thought the boys showed a bunch of improvements from our previous game. We corrected a bunch of things we needed to fix,” Chariton Head Coach Ben Schooley said.
The Chargers stormed out to a 20-11 lead after one period. Chariton outscored Southwest Valley 19-8 in the second to lead 39-19 at halftime. The Chargers didn’t let up as they outscored the Timberwolves 30-10 in the third to lead 59-29 after three periods.
