Outstanding performances including a school record-breaking high jump by Jackson Fisher propelled the Chariton boys track team to a second place finish at the Charger Relays April 9.
Fisher set a new CHS high jump record and won the meet with a jump of 6’7”. The jump also qualified him for this year’s Drake Relays. With the jump, Fisher broke his own school-record of 6’6” that he set last year.
Chariton also had the second place finisher in the high jump in Luke Lahart, who had a jump of 5’6”.
Along with the high jump, Chariton also won titles in the 800, discus and the 4 x 800 relay. They finished second in the high jump, 400, 800, 4 x 200, 4 x 400 and the sprint medley relays.
In the 4 x 800 relay, Chariton’s team of Tyler Goben, Hunter Koehn, Hall and Ben Lahart placed first overall with a season best time of 8:41.94. This beat their previous season-best time by 10 seconds.
Albia won the meet’s large school class with 200 points. Chariton was second in the large school class with 150 points and Interstate 35 was third with 114. Clarke was fourth with 105. Pella was fifth with 70 points and Creston was sixth with 30 points.
Ben Lahart placed first overall in the 800-meter run in 2:10.62. Trae Hall placed second in 2:13.05.
Riley Reece won the discus with a throw of 112’5”. Austin Metzger placed fifth overall with a throw of 103’1”. J.R. McDonough placed 13th with a throw of 62’9”.
In the shot put, Nick Wood placed third overall with a throw of 38’ 7 ½”. Peyton Lane placed fifth with a throw of 37’2”. In the long jump, Zach Young placed 10th with a jump of 14 feet even.
In the 400-meter dash, Koehn placed second overall in 54.48. Caiden Vandenburg placed 11th in 1:03.63.
In the 4 x 200 relay, Chariton’s team of Brady Hamilton, Fisher, Dylan Cain and Payton Lavender placed second in 1:34.74. In the 4 x 400 relay, the team of Ben Lahart, Koehn, Hamilton and Lavender placed second in 3:48.69.
In the sprint medley relay, the team of Jordan Wood, Cain, Will Swarthout and Lavender placed second in 1:42.66.
In the 4 x 100 relay, the team of Hamilton, Fisher, Cain and Lavender placed third in 46.03. In the JV 4 x 100, the team of Isaac Coker, Austin Ruth, Luke Lahart and Swarthout finished in 48.2.
In the 4 x 100 weight person relay, the team of Metzger, Reece, Peyton Lane and Nick Wood placed third in 55.10.
