Wow, what a win!
The Chariton varsity girls basketball team scored an electrifying come from behind 53-49 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at the Charger Dome Monday night.
Chariton starting point guard Emma Rector, a freshman, scored 10 points in the span of a minute in the fourth quarter to help erase a four-point deficit and give Chariton a four-point lead with 3:04 left.
Rector hit three three-pointers on the night including two during that span and led Chariton with 18 points to go along with two rebounds, three assists and five steals. Chariton senior guard Paige Burgett also had a standout game with 12 points, four rebounds, two steals and one block.
Senior Bree Ellis hit a big three-pointer and two big free throws late and had eight points, five rebounds, one assist and one block. Senior Grace Bengtson had five points, eight rebounds and tied for the team-lead in steals with five. Freshman Avery Hall had a team-high 11 rebounds including five offensive boards to go along with four points. She also hit two big free throws down the stretch.
Macy Johnston had five points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Abby Tuttle had one point. Taylor Pennington had one rebound. Leah Doran also played.
Chariton started out the game with Rector hitting a three and Burgett scoring after a Rector steals to give them a 5-0 lead. Eddyville’s Emalee Davis was hard to stop all night and scored to cut the Chariton lead to 5-3 with 5:15 left in the first period. Eddyville’s Grace Roberts hit a lay up to tie it at 5-5 with 2:41 left in the first period.
Chariton had some trouble hitting baskets after its quick start. Eddyville’s Davis hit a free throw and later a basket to give the Rockets an 8-5 lead. Chariton’s Ellis and Burgett each hit free throws to cu the lead to 8-7 with 10 seconds left in the first period.
Burgett scored and was fouled to give Chariton back the lead at 9-8. She missed the free throw to keep the score 9-8 after one period.
Bengtson and Rector each scored to give Chariton a 13-9 lead with seven minutes left until halftime. Eddyville’s Davis hit a basket to cut it to two but Burgett hit two more free throws to push the lead back to four. Eddyville’s Davis scored later to cut the lead to 15-14 with 5:41 left until halftime.
