The Chariton varsity baseball team played a doubleheader at Knoxville this past Wednesday night. The Varsity Chargers lost the first game, 7-1, and a high scoring game, 16-14, in the nightcap. After the doubleheader, Chariton’s record was 2-3 overall.

In the first game, Knoxville scored three runs in the second inning and added four in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Chariton scored once in the top of the fifth to cut it to 7-1, but couldn’t get any closer.

Brady Hamilton pitched the whole game and took the loss on the mound. In six innings he gave up seven runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking two.

Chariton had a tough time hitting off of Knoxville’s pitchers Carter Bailey and Kobie Marshall, who combined for a one-hitter and 12 strikeouts. Bailey got the win on the mound and struck out 10 batters.

At the plate, Chariton had one hit and one walk and also left five runners on base. Knoxville had seven hits, two walks, five strikeouts and left seven runners on base. Chariton committed four errors defensively and Knoxville committed three.

Right fielder Tyler Gookin went 1-3 with a single. First baseman Preston Lane went 0-2 with a run scored and was hit by a pitch. Hamilton went 0-3 at the plate. Center fielder Tristan Brackett had a walk and was hit by a pitch twice.

Shortstop Jackson Fisher went 0-3 and catcher Colbie Werts went 0-3. Second baseman Reid Walters went 0-3. Left fielder P.J. Rich went 0-2. Pinch hitter Logan Demichelis went 0-1. Third baseman Quenten Curtis went 0-3 and stole a base.

In the nightcap, Chariton led 1-0 after one inning and added five runs in the second to lead 6-0 going into the bottom of the second. Knoxville responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to cut it to 6-2 and they scored four runs in the third and four in the fourth to take a 10-6 lead.
