The Chariton Varsity girls basketball team gave a great effort in a 47-37 win over Clarke at the Charger Dome Tuesday night. The win gave Chariton a season sweep over the Lady Indians, as they beat them by 10, 56-46, at Osceola as well. With the win, Chariton moved to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Emma Rector led Chariton with 22 points including two three-pointers along with three rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block. Macy Wood had 10 points, four rebounds and two steals. Leah Doran had six points, five rebounds, and one steal.
Sophie Swarthout had four points, a team-high seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. Abby Tuttle had three points on a three-pointer, three rebounds and two steals. Lexi Smyser had two points, four rebounds and one assist. Tammera Alexander had two rebounds. Bailey Shelton also played.
“I thought we played extremely hard tonight. We outrebounded Clarke despite not having much size. Emma got off to a good start for us. When they went to a box and one, the other girls stepped up,” Chariton Head Coach Lee Sandy said.
Chariton got off to a good start and led most of the first quarter. They led by one, 13-12, at the end of one period.
Chariton went on a 7-0 run to start the second period including a basket by Doran and one by Wood and three free throws by Rector to give them a 20-12 lead with 5:34 left in the first half. Rector later hit a three to give them a 23-14 lead. Chariton led 23-17 at halftime.
A three-pointer by Tuttle along with by baskets by Wood and Smyser gave Chariton a 32-19 lead later in the third period. A basket by Swarthout made it 34-20 with 3:39 left in the third period.
Clarke went on a 6-0 run to end the period to make it 34-26 Chariton after three periods. The run continued into the fourth as they scored five more points to cut it to 34-31. Doran was fouled with 6:50 left in the third and hit two free throws to end the scoring drought for Chariton and give them a 36-31 lead.
