The Chariton Varsity softball team made a good effort but came up a little short in a 6-2 loss at Clarke Monday night.
Chariton held Clarke scoreless the first three innings and it was 0-0 heading into the fourth inning. The Lady Chargers scored the first run in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.
Clarke answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie it at 1-1. Chariton scored again in the top of the fifth to make it 2-1, but Clarke reeled off four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Indians added one more run in the sixth to make it 6-2 and held on for the win.
“This was a good effort by us again, especially after the Fairfield Tourney. We actually outhit Clarke 6-3 and Grace Bengtson pitched well,” Chariton Head Coach Deb Seuferer said.
Bengtson pitched the whole game and took the loss. In six innings she gave up six runs, five earned, on just three hits while striking out four and walking five. Chariton committed just one error defensively.
Third baseman Macy Wood went 1-4 with a double. Catcher Macy Johnston went 1-1 with a single, a run scored and three walks. Center fielder Layne Braby went 1-2 with a single, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly. Right fielder Taylor Welch went 1-2 with a single and a walk.
Second baseman Lexi Smyser went 1-3 with a single. Pinch hitter Brenna Shriver went 1-1 with a single and an RBI.
Shortstop Haddon Anderson went 0-4 with a run scored. She also reached base on error once. Bengtson went 0-3 and had a sacrifice bunt. Designated hitter Leah Doran went 0-3. Left fielder Savannah Williams went 0-2. Amara Fisher played in the game but didn’t bat.
