Joseph Edward O’Reilly was born March 28, 1927 to Phillip and Mary (Smyth) O’Reilly, and was raised in Eldora, Iowa. Joseph married Rose Anne Carroll of Des Moines, Iowa on May 1, 1954. Joseph began his farming career in Iowa Falls, and farmed more than 40 years in the Chariton area.
Joe was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. In these last few years he and Rose moved to Omaha, Neb.
He enjoyed singing – especially Irish music, which he would perform for anyone who would request a song. He was very proud of his Irish heritage.
His parents immigrated to the United States to escape the poverty of Ireland and the promise of a new land. Joe always spoke about the opportunities available to everyone in the United States if they were willing to work hard.
He placed high value on hard work and felt blessed to work. He loved looking at the crops as he was driving, always enjoyed good weather, and going out for coffee in the mornings with his friends.
He would do anything for his grandkids and was always on the hunt for a good deal for a vehicle.
Joseph O’Reilly is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rose, five children, Mary Jo O’Reilly of Omaha, Kathleen (Bruce) Chester of Chariton, Iowa, Jeannie (James) Torzala of Walton Kentucky, John (Nang) O’Reilly of Las Vegas, Phillip O’Reilly of Kansas City, and his friend Tammy, sixteen grandchildren, forty-one great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
