Carol A. Owens, age 81 of Chariton, Iowa and formerly of Grinnell, died on Monday, May 6, 2019 at Circle of Life Hospice and Legacy Lodge in Chariton.
A private family graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Rock Creek Cemetery west of Grinnell.

Carol Ann Guddendorf was born the daughter of John Peter Guddendorf, Jr. and Hazel Irene (Tinkle) Guddendorf on Nov. 18, 1937 in Hayward, Wisconsin. She was raised in Hayward and Malcom, Iowa respectively, and graduated from Malcom High School with the class of 1957.
Carol was united in marriage to Verlan John Owens on January 1, 1960 in Newton, Iowa. They resided on the family farm in Rock Creek Township northwest of Grinnell, where they raised their sons, Jeffrey and James. Carol had worked at several local businesses including GenTel; daycare at the United Methodist Church, Friendship Manor; Grinnell Schools as a cook, and was a longtime employee at DeLong’s Sportswear in Grinnell. She was a member of the Grinnell Eagles, Elks Lodge in Grinnell, and was an active volunteer at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
Carol was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities. She always kept her candy jar fully stocked for her grandchildren when they stopped by. She loved life on the farm and raising animals. Her enjoyments were having tea with the ladies, going to the casino, playing cards and dice, sewing, cooking, and fishing. She will be remembered for the love of her family and for being ornery and feisty.
Carol is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Claudia) Owens of Chariton, Iowa, and James (Melissa) Owens of Grinnell; grandchildren, Jamison and Clayton Owens of Chariton, and Blake Owens of Grinnell; sister, Marcella Moyer of Grinnell; and sister-in-law, Helen Kloppenborg of Juneau, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Verlan Owens on Dec. 9, 1993; sister, Linda Kriegel; and a child in infancy.
