Vena Charlene Lessy

Vena Charlene Lessy passed away Dec. 18, 2019 in Arvada, Colorado at Applewood Our House Assisted Living and Suncrest Hospice. She was born Dec. 10, 1922 to Charles and Olive Chandler.

Vena was the second child of four children. She had two sisters, Jessie Larrington (Verland) of Chariton, Iowa and Cleta Konrad (Herbert) of Lacona, Iowa and her brother, Vernon Chandler (Dorothy) of Lucas, Iowa.

Vena worked in a factory during WWII. After the war ended, she met Albert Lessy in Lucas, Iowa and they were married on June 20, 1946. Two daughters were born to this union; Delores Ann Beckett-Pastirchak (John) of La Junta, Colo and Betty Lois Greenwood (Keith) of Deer Trail, Colo.

Albert and Vena lived in Lucas, Iowa until December of 1950 when they moved to Deer Trail, Colo. Vena lived in the house they had built until December, 2014 when she became a resident of assisted living in Denver, Colo. Albert and Vena would take annual trips to Iowa to visit all her family and sometimes go to Missouri to see some of Albert’s family. One year, they went to Seattle, Wash. for the World’s Fair and also visited Albert’s brother, George.

Albert and Vena experienced the flood of 1965 and the devastation it caused. They were devoted to each other and she was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Shopping and eating at a favorite restaurant was something she loved to do. Her specialty in the kitchen was fried chicken and pies. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and crafts. Vena was very creative and made beautiful Christmas tree angels and gave them as gifts to so many. Everyone loved receiving her dish towels she made with creative themes. Another specialty was her famous peanut brittle, cinnamon hard candy, and cherry mash that people would beg her to make. She made two birthday cakes every year for Delores and Betty since they were born on the same day. She decorated each one beautifully.

Vena was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Deer Trail, Colo and was baptized in the church. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and was always a great fund raiser with the poppies and the knives she would sell for this organization. Another love for her was to donate her time for the well baby clinic and enjoyed helping with school events.
