Richard Maurice Delpierre, 86, died on Jan. 30, 2019. He was the youngest child of Phillip Delpierre and Eva Dernovich. Richard was born in Williamson, Iowa on July 28, 1932. Richard graduated from Chariton High School in the Class of 1950. He attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa from 1950-1952. Upon completion of two years at Parsons College in Iowa, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and then in the U.S. Air Force in 1956. In his 20 years of service, he sailed across the world and was stationed in ports across Europe and Asia.
He married Maria Klotsa in Athens, Greece in 1972 and from this union there were two children, Michael, 45 and Katherina, 43. The family moved to Roanoke, Va in 1977 to raise their children. Richard was employed as the Administrator of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Retiring at age 62, he was active with the League of Older Americans volunteering tax and insurance assistance for over 15 years. Richard married Azile Shelton in 1991. Richard and Azile retired together and filled their time being active in the community. Richard enjoyed traveling on tours, writing family history and working with his wife in the garden.
Richard is survived by his wife Azile, his children Michael and Katherina, his four grandchildren Alexandros and Marco Delpierre, and Margaret and Natalie Johnson, and his two older sisters Evelyn Callen and Marguerite Heston.
Richard will be buried in the Shelton family gravesite in Gretna, Va. The memorial service will be held at Oakey’s North Chapel in Roanoke, Va on Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. with the family receiving friends an hour prior to the service.
