Leonard Serle Deaver was born Sept. 29, 1938 in Ocheyedan, Iowa to Leonard Everett Deaver (1916-1999) and Joycelyn Brody Deaver (1919-2009). Serle died on August 29 at home in Chariton.
Serle graduated from Roosevelt High School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1957 and from Westmar College, Le Mars, Iowa in 1961 with a Major in Biology and Minor in Physical Education. Serle was a member of the Iowa National Guard beginning in 1957 until his discharge June, 1964.
On November 29, 1969 Serle married Sharon Cline Deaver at First Baptist Church, Des Moines, Iowa. Sharon’s parents are Harold T. Cline (1900-1980) and Vivian Crew Cline (1903-1990). Serle and Sharon have one son, Leonard Thomas “Tom” Deaver.
The couple returned to their home state of Iowa in 2010 after living away from Iowa for 39 years. During that time Serle was employed by the Young Men’s Christian Association for 26 years and 14 years with M. B. Kahn Construction Co. Inc. of Greenfield, S. C. until his retirement in 2003.
During his life Serle served his God, his family and his community. He served his God by the way he lived his life; prayer and Bible study; singing in church choir for over 40 years; teaching Sunday School and Awana’s; member of Gideons International serving the local camp in most leadership positions; Chairman of Church Mission’s with work primarily in Mexico and Pakistan. He served his family by the example he set; unconditional love; forgiving; providing for their needs and opportunities; not gossiping; sharing in joys and sorrows; his goodness and contentment and being faithful. He served his community by supporting/marching for the Sanctity of Human Life the God given gift of life from conception until natural death. He served on numerous boards and committees with emphasis on youth. He worked for United Way and Cancer Society.
He is survived by his wife and son and sister, Kaye Deaver Winter of Altoona; brothers, Keith (Jan) Deaver of Anamosa; Gery (Connie) Deaver of Cedar Falls; and, David (Jan) Deaver of Cedar Falls; brother-in-law Vaughn (Janet) Cline of Weldon; sisters-in-law, Joyce Cline Masaoay of Seymour; and Judith Cline Wright of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas.

A private burial was held Sept. 4th at the Glasgow Cemetery, Lockridge, Iowa (near Fairfield). The service was conducted by The Rev. Kevin Dice of Round Prairie Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Serle’s Life Service conducted by Pastor Dennis St. Lawrence, will be Saturday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. Grace Baptist Church, 703 S 1st St., Chariton. Music will be provided by members of Grace Church orchestra/choir with Kathy Brown Harvey, pianist and family friend, Carolyn K. Griffiths, of Monmouth, Illinois, joining choir members. The family will be in the Conference Room on upper floor of the church from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. prior to the service.
