Van Allen Elementary-CHS students sing National Anthem

Chariton High School singers sing the National Anthem during the Van Allen Veterans Day assembly. They are from left: Paige Farrell, Hannah Thatcher, Lydia Chapman, Maddie Watt, Trae Hall and Jesse Watkins.

Van Allen Elementary School in Chariton (grades 3-5) held a Veterans Day assembly in the Van Allen gym Monday morning.

Six members of Chariton American Legion Post #102 did the presentation of colors. They were: Don Garrett, Melody Allen, Mary Katherine Laird, Shelby Wesley, Justin Wesley and Tony Neel.

Mallory Willis of J.J. Stout’s fifth grade class at Van Allen led everyone in the saying of “The Pledge of Allegiance” and defined what Veterans Day is. Brynli Smyser from Chad Darrah’s fifth grade class at Van Allen read a poem called “A Solider.” The final six verses of the poem read as follows:

“If you are a civilian, I’m saying this to you….
