Bob Smith is running for City Councilman for the town of Russell. He was born seven miles south of Russell to Gene and Alene Smith. Smith grew up on a farm working with hogs, cattle, and row crops. As a side job, he worked throughout his teen years with his Uncle Floyd Dixon who was the largest homebuilder in Southern Iowa.
After graduating from Russell High School in 1978, Smith began working for the Grinnell, Iowa, Hy-Vee bakery. In 1979 he married his high school sweetheart Cindy Werts, and then eventually moved to Des Moines as Bakery Manager.
The Smiths later relocated to Denver, Colo., where Bob went to work with his Uncle Floyd as a co-owner of two Rib restaurants. After gaining experience there, he and Cindy bought two Wrangler Foods grocery stores employing up to 120 people.
Unfortunately, the economy took a turn for the worse, and they also lost their supplier. This brought the couple back to Iowa where Smith became the Bakery Director for Food 4 Less in Bondurant.
