Stephen Fenton is running for his first term on the Chariton City Council in the Nov. 5 election.
“I’m running because I felt that it’s time to step up and do something for the community,” Fenton said.
If he’s elected, Fenton said he would like to address maintenance and street issues. He also said that he thinks the way the current city council is conducted is fine.
Fenton gave his take on the condition of Chariton’s streets and if they need to be improved.
“I think the current Chariton City Council is spending what they can on the streets, budget wise. The last few years they’ve spent money wisely. They’ve started a rotation in street repair and the streets can always use more improvement,” Fenton said.
Fenton gave his take on adding new businesses to Chariton. “It would be great, but what would bring a business here to the square? We could use more eating places and clothing shops, but we’re competing against Wal-Mart and the big box stores and the Internet,” he said.
