Enforcement of cemetery rules follow cleanup
Sunday, April 20, is being billed as “Chariton Cemetery Clean Up Day.” It’s an introduction to the “Pride in Community” events that will officially kick-off on May 1.
The 30 volunteers who have committed their help on April 20 are challenging 30 more volunteers to come forward to insure the clean up work can be completed in one afternoon. As one volunteer put it, “The Clean Up is about making the cemetery ready for Memorial Day, the old Decoration Day. You want people to come and visit their families in a beautiful, peaceful setting. More volunteers needed to clean up 66-acre Chariton Cemetery
Sunday afternoon, April 20, is the date set for the clean-up of the Chariton Cemetery.
Sticks, branches, broken receptacles, loose and faded flowers, are scheduled to disappear from the Chariton Cemetery during the kick off to the City’s “Pride in Community” campaign. More volunteers are needed to help.

Pride in Community clean-up campaign kicks off in Chariton
Volunteers for this year’s Community Clean-Up Day, should contact the Chariton Chamber and Development Corporation or be on hand at the former Armory site from 8:30 a.m. to noon on May 7 to assist residents with unloading truckloads of items for disposal

Man who lost son in DWI crash to speak at Johnson Auditorium
On Nov. 24, 2001, Dale Reineke and his 21-year-old friend, Kristi Nielsen, both from Carroll, were killed in a head on drunk driving collision near Jefferson, Iowa. Dale’s fiancee, then Laurie Cooper, and another friend were seriously injured in the collision. Legislators promise to look into charges by Russell residents over close of school
In the ongoing fight to “Save the School,” about 200 parents, teachers, and students met at the Russell School gymnasium Saturday to hear the district’s presentation to local legislators.
